Letting the Clay Decide

Genaro Hoepfner spent twenty-five years as a carpenter before giving himself fully to ceramics. That long apprenticeship in wood, inherited from a father who built football tables, shaped a practice grounded in the hand, in patience, and in respect for material. In 2024 he founded his studio in Guadalajara, dedicated to large-format, high-temperature ceramic sculpture.

Each work begins with the clay body. Hoepfner blends his own pastes to obtain specific colours and textures, then builds every piece by hand. He never fixes the final form in advance: a general idea is enough, and the material does the rest. The result is a body of work defined by asymmetry held in balance, and by surfaces that cannot be repeated.

Sculptures made to hold the gaze without demanding it.

Simplicity, stillness and serenity are the principles of the studio. Hoepfner's sculptures are designed to remain the central presence in a room without imposing themselves on it, leaving the eye free to travel across their surfaces. Singular in scale and finish, each piece carries the trace of a process in which the maker listens as much as he shapes.
