A creature that only becomes visible in the rain.
Pankalangu Credenza takes its form from a Western Arrernte story of a territorial being that lives camouflaged in the scrub, moving only with rain, its shape revealed when falling water catches the light across its body. Trent Jansen developed the piece over sustained conversations with Western Arrernte custodian Baden Williams in Hermannsburg, working in consultation with local elders before translating the story into furniture.
Hundreds of individually shaped bent plywood scales cover the credenza's curved walnut body, each one catching light along a thin copper edge. From a distance the surface reads as camouflage, its pattern folding into the timber grain; only as light moves across it does the glistening silhouette described in the original story emerge.
