RO07 | Modern Sculptural Ceramic Object

Genaro Hoepfner's relationship with making began at home, watching his father build GEBAR football tables. That early exposure turned into a lasting attachment to wood, and from 1998 to 2023 he worked professionally as a carpenter, producing furniture, art objects and masks. Clay entered his life in parallel, first in 1996, and grew steadily until it took over. In 2024 he founded Genaro Hoepfner Cerámica in Guadalajara, where he now works exclusively on high-temperature ceramic sculpture.

His process starts long before the form appears: with the preparation of the clay itself. By selecting and blending different clays, he obtains the colours and surfaces that identify his work. Each piece is built by hand, and no two share the same dimensions or finish. He does not draw the final shape in advance. He begins with a general intention and lets the material and the technique lead, which produces forms that are asymmetrical yet balanced, and often unexpected even to their maker.
