Cracked earth, standing upright.

Manta Pilti (Dry Sand) was developed by Tanya Singer and Trent Jansen to communicate the time-critical, catastrophic effects of climate change on Country around Indulkana, in remote South Australia. The collaboration began when Tanya, Errol Evans and Maruku Arts invited Trent to their homelands at Railway Bore, where the designers Yarned and worked together over three years, engaging in processes of Deep Listening to each other and to Country.

Manta Pilti draws on the motif of cracking, drying sand and on Tanya's own reference to the Parakeelya flower, a small purple bloom that was her mother's favourite and once blanketed the Indulkana hills. As rising heat and reduced rainfall have pushed the flower into smaller, harder-to-find patches, the designers used its fading presence, and the fractured earth around it, to inform a furniture collection addressing ecosystem degradation and the distribution of environmental burdens between communities.

The cabinet's faceted body is built from irregular polygonal planes carved from a single American hardwood species, their joins traced in dark inlay that reads as cracks running across the surface. Two doors open along a central fracture line to reveal a fitted interior of shelving in the same timber, the exterior's broken geometry becoming, inside, a single continuous plane.

Materials: Carved American hardwood (walnut, cherry, or hard maple).

Height (cm): W1048 x D480* x H1900 mm (*depth to be confirmed against manufacturer drawing)
